...on the street near the LA Convention Center. I’m guessing it’s a ‘67 or ‘68 because it’s badged as having the 289 cu. in. Windsor V8, but I’m not an expert. Anyone want to verify/correct for me?

Regardless, this baby had me drooling. I’m not a fan of red, but the paint job was perfect for this car.

I’m pretty sure it’s a ‘67............horizontal bar in grill.

That is a ‘65 or ‘66. In ‘67 the car grew.

Yep. ‘67s also have the turn signals recessed into the hood.

1968 Mustangs have side marker lights, 1967s do not. Only difference!

The thing is this is THE worst angle for telling if it’s a ‘66 or a ‘67. Tailights and interior gauges are the easiest way to tell. Did the tailights concave in or were they concave out?

http://www.mustangdreams.com/1965%201966%20…

The grille on a ‘66 is oval/square and on a ‘67 it’s more trapezoidal, but you can’t tell from this angle!

‘66s had them too if you grabbed the foglight option.

I don’t think you can tell the whole 2 inches by the picture

but your eyes may be better than mine ;)

It’s a 66 based on the grill (no vertical bar) and front bumper.

I think that’s the decider here.

:-)x

It’s not the 2 inches but the puffed up proportions and more exaggerated lines. Pre ‘67 only has one line from the headlight back while ‘67 has a second on the side of the fender. Also, the three lines on the inside edge of the headlight surround are only pre ‘67 (I think) :-)x

Edit: Wrong about the second line thing, but pretty sure about the three line thing. lol

It’s a ‘65 or ‘66, but it’s been tarted up with a GT350R-ish valence and other Shelby bits (hood scoop, rear brake scoops and 1/4 fill panels behind the B-pillar (can’t tell if stock or Shelby spec at that angle) so we can’t tell for sure. ‘67-8's were longer, with more sharply angled noses, larger grill openings, deeper headlamp buckets, and concave tail panels with more integrated lights. ‘67's also had 2 stacked fake vents ahead of the rear wheels, whereas ‘68s had a single fake scoop.

For reference, a ‘67:

Kinja'd!!!

And ‘68:

Kinja'd!!!

Also, damn it’s hard to find good pictures of unmodified old Mustangs.

65/66 also have the ribs in the bodywork beside the grill, and circular rear views. The ‘67 moved to square mirrors. ‘67s also had subtle differences in the fake rear vent.

Regardless, pretty Mustang! I’d take one. Looks to be in better shape than my Cougar.

if it’s a 66 like everyone is guessing, the highest size engine from the factory was in fact a 289, lots of variants available, but 289. Assuming they didn’t swap it lol

The ‘gills’ by the headlight are definitely only ‘65-’66, but I’m having a blue dress/gold dress moment with the fender and door creases, so you I’m actually serious about you having better eyes than me. It just bugs me that literally almost ANY OTHER angle would have put this to bed XD

My money is on ‘66 though, since the hood scoop, turn signals, and side scoops are all easy ‘65/’66 add-ons, while they would take some body work with a ‘67/’68.

Also true. I was looking for the gills, but I honestly couldn’t tell in the picture if it was a reflection or not. It’s hard when it really isn’t that much work to swap or add some of the stuff such as mirrors or trim.

And you are correct: regardless, it’s very nice!

Also the side reflector under the end of the bumper on the ‘68 ;)

And those Shelby-style bits CAN be added to a ‘67/’68, but it’d take a bunch more work than on a ‘65/’66.

Lets do this!

Kinja'd!!!

Yes, there would be body work involved. The line that travels forward from the bottom of the side scoop goes all the way into the front fender on earlier cars, and stops half way through the door on later ones. :-)x

? The grill is a GT grill (and I failed to mention that specifically). What makes it a 66 vs 65 is the lack of the vertical bar. 67 has a more fluid bumper profile..

Sorry about the angle. I was rushing to a meeting at the convention center and only paused a sec to snap this. I wish I’d taken a few more, but oh well. I don’t remember the tail light differences.

All I have to go by on the engine size is the plaque in the fender saying 289. A little web digging told me that engine was an option on the ‘64 to ‘68 models. Whether or not that is accurate, I cannot verify. I had guessed ‘67 or ‘68 based on the hood scoop and overall profile along with engine size, but it was a shot in the dark.

I was tending to think ‘67 myself, but I can’t tell you exactly why.

Kinja'd!!!0

Okay, if those bits like the hood scoop are after market, that could be what was throwing me off. I was tending toward ‘67. I would not have guessed ‘66.

Okay, my original guess would have been ‘67, but then that’s why I asked! :)

The gills are definitely there. It’s clearer in the original photo I have on my desktop. So that confirms ‘66 then?

Oh you weren’t far off with those guesses, I’m saying from Ford it was the biggest that year. In also saying I went to a car show a few years ago and saw a Chevy II that said it was a 327 on the fender but has a FOUR27 under the hood lol
